 Rabbit Meadows Report

Thank You!

We sometimes forget to say thank you. So we'd like to start out by saying THANK YOU for your continuing support. Whether you shop at our store, send in donations or volunteer your time -- it is YOU who are responsible for saving the lives of the animals we care for.
Some small critter has touched your life and made you aware of how special they are. Because of that you have made a decision, through your contact with us, to help in your own way. You ARE making a huge difference in the lives of a lot of animals, so give yourself a pat on the back.
This Thanksgiving, while we're remembering how thankful we are for you, we hope you will also give yourself a great big THANK YOU!

Busy Bunny Products Now Available

Busy Bunny 2

Just in time for the holidays!

Our Seattle store is now carrying much of the Busy Bunny product line which is made of timothy or willow. All products are safely edible and tossable by rabbits, guinea pigs and rodents.

There are many great stocking stuffers for the rabbit who has almost everything or who thinks he should have everything.

If you're wondering what to get for that person who lives with rabbits, please come visit with us and checkout what we have in stock. Prices ramge from $1 - $24!

We will also be happy to ship items if you give us a call (206-365-9105) -- Our online store is currently broken, we need a volunteer to get it up and running. Do you know anyone?

Construction Project is Underway!

After a setback last year when we had to spend $30K on a new well, we are at long last on the road to constructing our new shelter!

  • Instead of the individual buildings we first designed, we received additional advice, and are now putting up a two story 48' x 38' building.
  • We have just submitted our application to King County for our building permit. Apparently this process will take a minimum of 3 months.
  • While waiting for Permit Approval, we can begin gathering construction supplies that we will need. And of course we will continue fundraising for this huge project. We hope you will participate with us in whatever way you can, to help accomplish this goal.
  • See the lists below. If you, like many of us, are still feeling the pinch of the poor economy you don't have to be left out. You can  still help our rabbit, guinea pig, and rodent friends by donating your time. Volunteer hours are the most critical element of making this project a success.

Cathy has Finally Found Her Permanent Home!

Cathy   Cathy was born in our shelter on April 7, 2007 and has lived here until last week, when she went home as a companion to  rabbit Golo and humans Herb & Leslie. Many so-called "no kill shelters" state that they don't euthanize healthy adoptable animals, but if an animal isn't adopted within a set time they are moved into the unadoptable category and will be euthanized.

It's unusual that Cathy took 3 1/2 years to find a home, but as a true no-kill shelter we are committed to caring for animals until they do find their forever home. Cathy is just one example of where your donation dollars go.

2011 Silent Auction

Believe it or not it's time to start working on our 5th Annual Silent Auction and Dinner.  With your help we'll again have a great time at the Rusty Pelican and be able to pay for a large chunk of our new shelter. We’d love to have someone head up this project and to help us gather items for the auction.  If you don't have lots of time, you can help by making a list of businesses you frequent and next time you visit them over the following months ask if they’d be willing to donate an item or service to your favorite cause. Contact Auction@RabbitMeadows.org if you can help in any way. (We anticipate that the auction will be held in early May.)

2010 has been a very good year for over 130 newly rescued rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, gerbils, mice, chinchillas, prairie dogs, degus, cottontails and squirrels. Many have already been adopted into their new homes, while others still wait at Rabbit Meadows for someone to adopt them into their forever home. (The wildlife is released at Rabbit Meadows whenever possible.) We also continue to care for approximately 150 feral rabbits and another 25 rabbits, a disabled cottontail and disabled squirrel who are living out their lives at our sanctuary.

In 2010 we have worked with Whatcom County Humane Society, Edmonds Animal Control/Adix, Seattle Animal Shelter, Everett Animal Shelter & Ellensburg Animal Control.

We sell supplies at our Lake City store, which helps to support us, but the largest part of our support comes from you! We hope you'll continue to help us care for these delightful, grateful animals. Without your support the fate of these animals would not be so happy.

You can make a secure PayPal donation on our web site  RabbitMeadows or you can mail your check to: Rabbit Meadows, 14317 Lake City Way NE, Seattle 98125 or you can use your credit card at our store to make a donation. You can sometimes double your donation if you work for a company that matches donations to non-profit organizations!

We thank you and know that the animals would thank you if they could speak.

  We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations.

All donations at tax deductible.

Guinea Pigs

Guinea Pigs Require extra Vitamin C. Vit C is water soluble and therefore it will lose it’s efficacy within a short time if used in a liquid form.

If your guinea pig takes a drink soon after you put Vit C in their water, they will receive some Vit C, but it will not be the amount that they require.

Oxbow makes a tablet that contains 80 mg of Vit C. It is scored so it will easily break into two pieces/doses.

Guinea Pigs are suspicious critters.  If he won’t take and eat it, you can crush the proper dosage between two spoons, and sprinkle it over his veggies. In a few days he’ll be used to the taste and you can then hand him the tablet.

We much prefer handing the Vit C tablet to our g. pigs so that we know they have actually received the correct amount.

Looking for Love

Tinkerbell

Tinkerbell and Babies

Tinkerbell and her two babies, Carmel & Nuget are all very social and would love to find a permanent home. Come visit them at our Redmond Shelter.

Pipin

Pipin

Pipin is a big beautiful bunny with a bouncy personality. Perhaps 2 years old, she is being spayed this week and will then be ready to begin her new future as a beloved house rabbit. If you or your rabbit are interested come meet her.

Hank

Hank 2

Hank is a delightful little guy about 9 months old. He's full of energy and demands your attention. If you groom him, he'll groom you. Do you have a girl bunny looking for her Don Juan? Let's talk!

Harry, Henry, Horatio & Houdini

Gerbils 15  It's preferable to keep this family of 4 brothers together, but we will split them up into two pairs if necessary to find them a home. Visit them at our Seattle location.

Gerbils don't enjoy being held. And it's almost impossible to do so anyway. It's a mistake to think these make good pets for children. If you give gerbils to children, they will be dropped and can be badly injured --- or they may disappear under furniture for days

Did You Know that Hamsters Can Hibernate?

It's been so cold recently that it reminds me that hamsters sometimes get into trouble at this time of year. If their area is not kept warm enough, hamsters can go into such a deep hibernation that they may appear to be dead. Don't assume they have died without first using a heat pad or heat lamp to warm them.

To avoid this situation, we place a heat pad under the portion of their cage where they sleep.

Check our Web page for more companion animals looking for permanent homes.
