Rabbits are not rodents Rabbits belong to the order of harelike animals known as the Lagomorpha. This word is derived from the Greek words Lagos, which means hare, and morphe, which relates to form or shape. Lagomorpha means literally, harelike, or formed like a hare. At one time rabbits were included with the rodents or gnawing mammals in the order Rodentia, but in 1945 Simpson argued that rabbits and their relatives had enough unique characteristics to warrant a separate order of their own. |
